How are you feeling about the climate crisis currently?
And how do you manage your emotions about it?
These were the questions I put to 4 friends, and the subsequent conversations were recorded. I then chose segments of those chats to include in the game. I noticed I was particularly struck by any statements that I felt touched by in some way, or had been put into words in a way I personally might not have been able to.
The narrative was inspired by a conversation I'd had with my child back in 2021 as they were learning about the climate in primary school.
I try to live as 'anti-despair' as I can in the world, and I loved the process of making something playful and heartfelt in response to something quite terrible.
This project was commissioned by the Yorkshire Sound Women Network https://yorkshiresoundwomen.com/ as part of their 2026 Rewired project which invited composers to create new electronic music, which could focus on raising public awareness of the climate emergency through sound if they chose.
For me, I wanted to create music that felt supportive and uplifting, to counter the despair that can arise when contemplating this issue. If you enjoyed the music and would like to hear more of my work, please visit https://naomicomposes.com/ where you can do just that and also play my interactive business card.
Many thanks to Claire Morwood's invaluable tutorial page from which I drew much inspiration (especially the big avatars!) https://www.shimmerwitch.space/bitsyTutorial.html
and her wonderful Limbo Train which inspired me to give Bitsy a go in the first place. https://shimmerwitch.itch.io/limbo-train
Thanks also to Sean S. LeBlanc whose very cool game Radio Silence I tried to copy the rain animation from as I was obsessed by how it looked! https://seansleblanc.itch.io/rain
